Developing molecular tools to differentiate flatfish and gadid species of fish

  • The aim of the project proposal is to develop a molecular tool based on microsatellite markers and phylogenetic and statistic models to differentiate most of the flatfish and gadid species of commercial importance, thus allowing the authentication and correct labeling control of seafood products elaborated from these fish groups.  The technique to be developed will permit the simultaneous and unambiguous identification of these species in all types of commercial products and would be designed in a way to permit easy adaptation to all average-equipped laboratories
  • The institute/company is looking for companies engaged in flatfish and gadids importation or/and comercialization interested in the full traceability of their products. As well as chain stores and supermarkets occupyied with solving the same matter

Low cost processes for Pectin Production and for some Biomedical Applications / 3 steps / 3 projects / Romania

  • A new combination of environmentally friendly processes for producing low-cost refined pectin is proposed. The process  includes cross flash hydrolysis-extraction of pectin from raw matesrials, flow membrane filtration technology with dia-ultrafiltration systems that make it possible simultaneously purification and concentration of the  pectin hydrolyzed solution.
  • Complementarily, the process for pectin production from plant raw materials in dynamics mode is proposed, namely to effective method of pectin isolation from sunflower, which may be used for the production of prophylactic and medical assignments as well as in food and pharmaceuticals. This process aims to reduce the contact time with acidic solution at the pretreatment of raw materials and its hydrolysis-extraction, increase pectin yield and its quality when processing pectin from sunflower.
  •  Finally, a new drug delivery system (DDS) is proposed based on pectin/protein in form of hydrogels and microcapsules. The hydrogel drug delivery form based on the use of pectin and corn zein hydrogels. The microcapsules are created on the base of pectin/B-Lg concentrate. Both therapeutic systems may withstand high temperature and pH, to protect active drug, aroma and flavor. The first DDS is easy to produce and stabile in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

The exploitation of by-products from food production

  •  Development of a new technology for the exploitation of by-products from food production into new refuse derived fuel and feed. The output of the project is a technology and the necessary extrusion equipment for processing different products like pelletised bran for fuel or for other purposes from the different by products from the milling industry (bran and out of specification low grade (“feed”) flour, which was used) or from other industrial (oil seeds) and the agricultural production (e.g. straw). It is a green energy source. It can contribute to the better explanation of the available raw material and the reduction of waste.
  • The technology and equipment are planned to be marketed jointly, potentially as a franchise.
  • The company is seeking a strategic partnership with companies; for development equipment (extrusion of different by-products from agriculture and milling industry into combustible, easy to handle form), packaging facilities (packaging material and technology for different size packages), other „raw material” producer for different technologies (oil seeds, straw, etc.)

Natural yellow pigments for feed and hen eggs

  • The aim of this project is to develop production systems for natural pigments in Europe. The global production of natural pigments (contrary to synthetic pigments) is increasing because of their healthy and environmental friendly image. This meets more and more often consumers’ demands of naturalness in food. The main sources of yellow pigments are Tagetes ssp and Calendula ssp plants where colour compounds – carotenoids - are accumulated into flowers. The field tests in SW-Finland have shown that it is possible to cultivate these plants even in northern latitudes. In the project we: improve cultivation techniques with correct varieties, improve harvesting technique by building “picking machine”-prototype, improve drying process by enzymes and drum-dryer to get sufficient pigment content without further processing. In the project we develop “high-lutein feed” and evaluate the effect of different lipids in feed on lutein bioaccumulation to yolk.
  • contribution sought: cultivation techniques with correct varieties,  harvesting techniques,  drying processes, analysis of bioactivities
